Air covered yarns (synthetic textured filament yarns, pneumatically intermingled with elastomer) are used in many sectors of the textile industry, wherever it is not possible to directly attach a bare elastomer to the machine.

The elastomer used in the core of an air covered  yarn can occur in thicknesses from 13 to even 156 dtex. At the client’s request we are able to provide original high-quality products: LYCRA®, CREORA®, ROICA® and a cheaper replacement produced in China - Spandex.

The cover is mainly made of a textured synthetic yarn (polyamide, polyester and polypropylene - PA6 DTY, PA66 DTY, PES DTY, PP DTY) and its usual thickness is 11-312 dtex. The yarns of a core and a cover are linked together using compressed air at a pressure of about 4 atmospheres.

In the production process of air textured yarns the elastomer is initially stretched in the range of 150% (very thin elastomers) and to 400% (very thick elastomers).

In addition to the thickness used in the core of the elastomer another parameter affecting the applied stretch is the desired type of elastic force of the ACY:

- delicate elasticity - stretch range between 150% and 250%

- aggressive elasticity - stretch range between 350% and 400%

The standard stretch of elastomer used in the production of ACY is 300% (this value means that the 22 dtex elastomer in the ACY has a thickness of approx. 7.3 dtex). The 300% stretch is used for standard types of elasticity of ACY and standard elastomer thicknesses in the core (22- 44 dtex).

 

Air covered yarns are produced on two different machine types:

- 1 step production (ACY = air covered yarn 1 step) - takes place directly on the texturizing machine in one process. POY is drawn, stabilized and textured with friction and then the ready-made textured yarn is pneumatically intermingled with the elastomer and wound on a commercial bobbin with a weight of approx. 1.2 kg (maximum possible is 2.2 kg).

- 2-step production (ACY = air covered yarn 2 steps) - takes place in two stages on two separate machines. First, the POY is placed on the texturizing machine, drawn, stabilized and textured with friction and then on the air covering machine the finished textured yarn is pneumatically intermingled with the elastomer and wound on a commercial bobbin with the weight of approx. 1.2 kg (maximum possible is 2.2 kg).

 

Sometimes it is necessary to put together two small bobbins of air covered yarns into one large. For such a procedure we use weaving knots which have to be turned outwards the bobbin. However, this applies only to approx. 10% of all bobbins.

Air covering machines can also produce non-elastic yarns (instead of an elastomer another synthetic yarn is given).

 

The most popular non-elastic air covered yarns are:

- DTY polyamide, raw white +DTY polyester, raw white à after dyeing the knitted fabric we obtain the melange effect as polyester and polyamide are dyed in other groups of dyes

- DTY polyamide black or colored + DTY polyamide raw white à we obtain the effect of melange, the yarn is already two-colored, there is no need to dye the knitted fabrics, it just has to be washed and stabilized

- DTY polyamide raw white + DTY polyester black or colored à we obtain the effect of melange, the yarn is already two-colored, there is no need to dye the knitted fabric, it just has to be washed and stabilized

- DTY polyamide / polyester + antistatic steel yarn à we obtain a knitted fabric with a high level of resistance (anti-static) and high tensile strength

- DTY polyamide / polyester + glass filament yarn à we obtain a knitted fabric with a high level of resistance to cutting

 

COVERED YARNS

Covered  yarns (elastomer in the core covered with synthetic filament yarns, textured or smooth) are used in many sectors of the textile industry, wherever it is impossible to directly attach the elastomer to the machine and everywhere where it is necessary to cover the elastomer with other synthetic yarn. Latex as a natural and elastic yarn can also be the core.
